Once upon a time there lived two men, Vieri da Vallonara and Rinaldo D’Angarano, who were deeply enamored with the beautiful Lionara, daughter of Taddeo Parisio (Lord of Marostica’s castle). The year was 1454 and the two men challenged one another to a duel to decide which one would marry Lionara. In an effort to maintain peace, the lord suggested a chess match in lieu of the duel. His daughter Lionara was to marry the winner and her sister, Oldrada, would marry the loser. As the tale goes, the match was played in the town square, attended by the lord, his daughter, the noble court and Marostica’s townspeople. All lived happily ever after. Today, this legendary duel is re-enacted on the second weekend of September in even-numbered years with great pomp and circumstance. Suited in the finest Renaissance garb, more than 500 townspeople celebrate the majestic legend by playing chess matches on the life-size chess board in the town square (conducted in the dialect of the Venetian Republic) and in processions marked by dancing, music and fireworks. Performances generally take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 9 pmand Sunday at 5 pm, lasting approximately two hours. It is best to purchase tickets in advance. Visit the website or contact the tourist office for details.
